Ellie hit the three month mark last Wed. I have to admit, it wasn't quite the magical day everyone assured us it would be; I was imagining that the stars would all align just right, the windchill factor would be just so, and our little Ellie would just fall into a nice little contented routine. Still lots of fussiness, though; still lots of bouncing on the exercise ball; still lots of difficult feedings. Most of it is thanks to the reflux, I think, which the doctor said she would likely outgrow by 6-9 months. In the meantime, she is actually getting herself onto a pretty good routine for eating, the medicine is helping some, and she is taking longer, if unpredictable naps. Considering how uncomfortable she is, I think she is doing really well most of the time, actually.

I was so close to catching a real smile on camera this time.

Just missed it.

This month she has been out and about more too, not just sleeping through whatever errands we run, but wanting to be up and look around at everyone and everything. Yesterday at the grocery store Brady was carrying her, strapped in the jeep carrier (like a baby bjorn). Everyone kept commenting about our little boy. I guess they ignored the purple, flowery sweater I put on her. I know everyone has stories like this, and most of the time it doesn't bother me. Today, though, I decided there would be no mistaking. Nice frilly dress for church. Tights. Shiny black shoes. The works. Shortly after the meeting started a little girl on the bench behind us pointed to Ellie and asked her mom, "Is that a girl?" I sighed and hung my head in defeat.
We thought maybe it was her baldness that was throwing everyone. So we are experimenting with some different hairstyles for her:

It is a little awkward to carry her like this all the time, though. I think I may have to cave and get her some of those huge headbands with giant bows on them. I'll teach those 5-year-old girls in our ward not to confuse the gender of my baby!
Although Ellie looks quite a bit like her father, she does look like a girl. It's just a mistake ogling spectators are bound to make. Everyone thought that our boy was a girl because he had such long eyelashes, and everyone thought that our girl was a boy since we dressed her in her brother's old clothes for so long....well that last one might be our fault. Oh well. I'd go with the last hairstyle on Ellie. It seems to highlight her sleepiness the least.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny how people just don't pay attention to the clothes. I had someone ask if Harrison was a girl. And I said, "No, he's a boy. See his the dinosaurs on his outfit." What a werido!
ReplyDeleteWe've had genders mistaken on our kids, too. Love the hair! Hey, I'm sorry to hear you guys are struggling with reflux. Ruth had a really bad case of that and was sooooo fussy, and Evan has a bit of it, too. He's on zantac-- is that what Ellie is on, too? Good luck! We feel for you!
ReplyDeleteYou can get headbands with little actual pigtails attached to them, too. That's rough that the baby has reflux! Do you breastfeed or do formula? Or does that have nothing to do with it? Just want to know for when my baby comes! Pregnancy has given me some nasty reflux--can't wait for that to go :-(. Also, my baby has the hiccups at least once a day. It's very strange feeling a rhythmic thumping in one's stomach. It makes me feel like she's going to be musical like her dad. Your baby is so cute! It must be so much fun for you guys-wish you lived closer so the little cousins could bond more!
ReplyDeleteAlisse--I remembered that Ruth had reflux pretty bad too. We do have Ellie on Zantac and that seems to help some. The doctor also told us to start her on solids (just applesauce and mashed bananas) at 3.5 months instead of waiting until 4, so next week we will do that. We hear that is supposed to help a bunch.
ReplyDeleteKari--Ellie had hiccups a lot right before she was born too, but I don't know if it is related. I also don't know if it matters how you end up feeding your baby for whether she gets reflux or not. I've heard of baby fed both ways of having it. The doctor told me that it was because the flap that closes and separates her stomach and esophagus isn't working as well as it should yet, but she will outgrow it as it develops better. So solids will help because they are heavier and don't come back up as easy. At least your reflux will for sure end soon! I wish we lived closer too. We are working on it!
Congratulations on such a beautiful little girl. I came to your blog through Tyler and Chelsea's and I'm glad to see you doing so well. Ellie is beautiful and VERY girly :) I hope her reflux gets better soon!!
